1. Last August I turned fifty six and a half.

                C                                                      G                        C

Whatcha gonna be when you grow up? my friends sometimes ask.

           F                                                              C

And I tell them that you’re only as old as you feel,

                  C                                           G            C

while I’m thinking to myself I’m about ready to keel.

                              F                                        C

Chorus:  Cause I keep getting older, and it keeps getting harder,

           G                 G7              C               C7

and I keep feeling dumber the more I get smarter.

               F                                        C

Nother penny in my pony, and I’ll try to keep a-going,

              G                         G7                                 C

cause a grownup is just a person who’s no longer growing.

                    C                                               G                     C

2. Now my peer group all are getting good jobs with good pay.

                C                                         G             C

I’m still roaming around looking for places to play.

           F                                                    C

And I long for security, but I try to keep mobile.

               C                                       G                 C

And I’m scared of the future, both personal and global.

Chorus

                     C                                         G              C

3. When my time comes to die, be it by cancer or bomb,

           C                                          G                  C

let my lips be still puckered at my soap bubble wand.

               F                                                              C

Cause I think that it’s true, what was said by Dr. Seuss:

  C                                         G             C

“Adults are obsolete children, and the hell with them.”

Chorus
